One of the outstanding qualities of Saki besides his offbeat humor and his vivid imagination was his graceful writing The phrases and sentences that he used in his writing were both well written and polished This story like so many of Sakis other stories is not only amusing but forces the reader to think Saki was the pen name used by an English author better known as H H Munro and the name by which he is widely known The stranger suggests that his predicament being penniless would have been less serious if he were in a foreign city instead Presumably because his account could not be confirmed it could not be denied either All that would be neccessary was for him to go to the consulate and to ask for help In his home country England people would have been less likely to believe him and to lend him the needed money The author felt that Dusk the title of the story reflected the hourof the defeated It were the persons defeated in the struggle of life who came forth at this time a time when they and their lack of fortune would go unnoticed by other members of the public These persons the author describes as because like the wandering planets they could only be seen at twilight Gortsby also considered himself to be among the defeated not that monetary problems bothered him but that his ambition and self respect had failed him Says the poet A king that is conquered must see strange looks So bitter a thing is the heart of man This story like so many successful short stories has a surprise ending to it The veracity of the strangers tale rests upon a cake of soap which he claims to have lost Gortsby is convinced of the of the strangers story when he recovers the cake of soap lying under the bench Believing the stranger to be an honest man and therefore for having regarded him as a conman Gortsby rushes forth to lend him a sovereign But the truth about the stranger finally comes out in the end when he learns that the cake of soap had actually been lost by an earlier occupant of the bench an elderly man One can never be too hasty in judging by the author seems to be saying However the surprise ending forces the reader to do a double think for Gortsby was initially right in regarding the stranger as an ordinary conman albeit with the gift of gab In a manner of speaking Gortsby who had nothing better to do was pitting his wits against the stranger and trying to pick holes in his story Under these the loss of a sovereign was no great loss as the stranger had provided an evenings to Gortsby As he had accosted the stranger to begin with Gortsby could not claim to be the aggrieved party The stranger too had to work hard to earn asamotną suwerenne Perhaps jego geniusz zagubionej był jego geniusz może mieć więcej zatrudniony gdzie indziej w bardziej rzetelnych pracy grudnia 2009 r 02
